Years ago, after watching the movie Moulin Rouge together, Foops surprised me with a CD of the soundtrack. He knew how much the soppy romantic in me LOVED the dizzying glitziness of the movie, the whirling burst of colours and costumes, quirky characters and most of all, the poignant story of life, and love.
Shortly after, he walked out of my life.
I was crushed. And smarting from the pain, I never opened or touched the CD again.
One afternoon, Nora came over to hang out in my room and when she saw the CD - pristine in its cling wrap still - lying unopened on my desk, she asked if she could borrow it. I said sure. She could even have it if she wants, I didn't want it anymore. She intuitively guessed it was from Foops (then affectionately nicknamed Monster by her). She said 'Okay I'm just going keep it for now, Debs, but when you're alright again, I'm going to return it to you.' I was in too pathetic a state to argue with her but I knew she understood perfectly :)
Some time later, Foops and I got back together, this time for real. One of the messages he sent to me during that period was: Come what may, I will love you until my dying day. He hasn't forgotten. I still keep it till today because it always makes me beam when I read it. I can imagine him singing it in a dramatic fashion actually ;). And it was also reassurance that I sorely needed to open my heart again.
He was a little hurt to learn I had given the CD away. I never got around to taking the CD back from Nora because she had left Singapore for NZ and come on, it's been so long! Besides I really didn't mind that she kept it because she's been so great.
Foopy and I are celebrating our anniversary today. And for old times' sake, I bought the Moulin Rouge's CD again on my way home earlier. Just because. This one's for keeps now :)
The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. I couln't have said it better.
Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace
Suddenly my life doesn't seem such a waste
It all revolves around you
And there's no mountain too high
No river too wide
Sing out this song and I'll be there by your side
Storm clouds may gather,
And stars may collide
But I love you
Until the end of time
